Nothing OS 5.0 Hits Four More Phones Early: Android 17 UK Update Guide

Nothing OS 5.0 is rolling out to Phone (3a), (3a) Pro, (4a) and (4a) Pro. Here's what's new, UK availability, and how to install Android 17.

Published 1 November 2026. Nothing has begun releasing Nothing OS 5.0, based on Android 17, for four more of its smartphones: Phone (3a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro. The first stable firmware changelogs appeared on Nothing's own community site on 30 October 2026, ahead of the company's previously advertised early-November window. For UK owners, that means the update is officially under way — but it may not appear on every handset immediately.

The release brings a more customisable interface, a new Glyph app, revised privacy indicators, camera upgrades and a range of smaller Android 17 refinements. There is one important distinction: some AI and camera functions depend on which Nothing phone you own.

Which Nothing phones are receiving Android 17 now?

Nothing published stable-build notices for all four models on 30 October. Its official posts identify the following firmware versions:

Phone Stable Nothing OS 5.0 build Rollout status
Nothing Phone (3a) C5.0-261023-2146 Phased rollout started
Nothing Phone (3a) Pro C5.0-261023-2146 (3a series) Phased rollout started
Nothing Phone (4a) C5.0-261023-2145 Phased rollout started
Nothing Phone (4a) Pro C5.0-261021-1625 Phased rollout started

The version numbers come from Nothing's Phone (3a) series changelog, Phone (4a) changelog and Phone (4a) Pro changelog. Regional build identifiers can vary, so do not assume your handset must display an identical full version string.

Nothing's official UK rollout schedule still describes early November as the general-release window for these devices. The 30 October firmware posts confirm that deployment began earlier than that indicative schedule, not that every UK phone has already received it. Nothing says software is released in stages, with regional and carrier variations.

What's new in Nothing OS 5.0?

1. Split notifications and Quick Settings

You can separate notifications from the Quick Settings panel instead of keeping everything in one combined shade. Nothing lists the setting under Settings > Notifications > General > Notifications and Quick Settings. This is a useful option for people who want more room for alerts or quicker access to controls, although the preferred layout is a matter of taste.

2. A new Translucent theme and refreshed home screen

The new Translucent launcher theme adds a frosted-glass effect and subtle colours influenced by your wallpaper. Nothing has also revised the Geist typeface, Settings layouts, status-bar graphics, transitions and lock-screen clock choices. Home-screen bulk arranging lets you select and move several icons rather than repositioning them one at a time.

3. A dedicated Glyph app and useful widgets

The Glyph app brings the phone's lighting controls together in the app drawer. Nothing also lists a Glyph Timer widget, a Collector widget for displaying images on your home screen, and Away Time widgets designed to help you track breaks from your phone.

4. More visible privacy and accessibility controls

A three-colour status-bar indicator is designed to make sensitive activity, including location access and AI processing, more apparent. Expanded Dark theme can apply a dark appearance to many apps that lack their own dark mode. An HDR brightness setting and simpler one-tap Bluetooth connections in Quick Settings are also included.

5. Camera improvements — with differences between models

For the Phone (3a) series, Nothing's changelog specifically lists seven adjustable camera Tuning effects, revised Presets, filters for video and Dual-view Video recording. The Phone (4a) and (4a) Pro changelogs also list Dual-view Video, which can record from front and rear cameras simultaneously, plus a refreshed Camera interface. The Phone (4a) series notices include faster Essential Voice transcription; do not assume every Essential AI feature is available on the 3a series.

How to check for the update in the UK

  1. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi and ensure your phone has adequate charge.
  2. Back up photos, contacts, messages and other important data first.
  3. Open Settings > System > System update.
  4. Check for a new Nothing OS 5.0 update and follow the on-screen instructions if it is offered.
  5. If nothing appears, check again later. A phased rollout is not necessarily a problem with your phone.

Nothing warns that phones can feel warmer or use more power during installation before settling down. If you are running an open beta and the stable build does not immediately appear, the company advises patience as rollout proceeds. We would avoid unofficial firmware files and unverified installation shortcuts, particularly on a device you rely on for work or banking.

What about Phone (2a), Phone (2) and other Nothing models?

Nothing's UK roadmap lists Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus for a mid-November 2026 general release, Phone (3a) Lite for late December, and Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro for mid-January. These are indicative targets, not guaranteed installation dates.

The Phone (3) started receiving the stable update on 12 October. By contrast, Nothing explicitly says that Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0. Owners of those older models should not confuse the absence of Android 17 with an update that is merely delayed.

Should UK owners install Nothing OS 5.0 straight away?

For most eligible owners, this is a substantial free software update worth considering. The combination of camera options, easier Bluetooth control, interface personalisation and clearer privacy indicators gives the upgrade practical value beyond a new version number. But there is no need to force an installation on day one: staged rollouts allow the manufacturer to monitor issues, and the company has not promised a simultaneous UK-wide release.

Our advice is to back up first, install through the built-in updater when offered, and check app compatibility if your phone is essential for business. The update itself does not require buying a new handset. We have not independently installed or benchmarked the new software, so claims about real-world battery life, performance and camera quality should be treated as manufacturer-described improvements rather than hands-on test results.

Yes. Nothing's official stable release notes identify Nothing OS 5.0 as powered by Android 17.

Is the update available in Britain?

The rollout has begun globally, including models sold in the UK, but Nothing says distribution is phased by region and carrier. Individual UK availability should be checked on the handset.

No separate purchase is announced for the operating-system update on eligible devices.

Will Phone (2) receive Android 17?

Not through Nothing OS 5.0. Nothing's official UK roadmap lists Phone (2) among models that will not receive this major update.
