Apple’s OLED iPad mini Is Now Available in the UK From £699 — Is It Worth Upgrading?
Apple's new OLED iPad mini is now available in the UK from £699. Here's what changed, the full cost with Apple Pencil, and whether upgrading makes sense.
Published 7 November 2026. Apple's redesigned iPad mini began arriving in UK shops and with customers on Friday 6 November. The compact tablet now features an 8.5-inch OLED screen, the A20 Pro chip and a slimmer design, but its £699 starting price makes the buying decision more complicated than the specifications suggest.
iPad mini 2026 UK price and release date
Apple confirmed the new iPad mini was available from 6 November 2026, following pre-orders opening on 28 October. UK prices start at £699 for Wi-Fi and £849 for Wi-Fi + Cellular. Both entry-level configurations offer 128GB storage, with 256GB and 512GB options also available. Apple's education starting price is £649 for eligible customers. Prices are official UK list prices, not a claim about individual retailers' stock or discounts.
What has changed?
The headline upgrade is the move to an 8.5-inch OLED display. Compared with a conventional LCD, OLED can deliver much deeper blacks and strong contrast, making it appealing for reading, video and photo viewing. The tablet also uses Apple's A20 Pro chip and supports Wi-Fi 7, where compatible networks are available. Apple lists an IP67 water- and dust-resistance rating, but warns that this protection can diminish with wear and that liquid damage is not covered by warranty.
The compact format remains the central attraction: this is for people who want a smaller tablet rather than a replacement for a full-sized laptop. Apple's new model comes in midnight and starlight finishes.
Does the £699 price include an Apple Pencil?
No. The new iPad mini supports both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), but each is sold separately. Apple lists £129 for Apple Pencil Pro and £79 for Apple Pencil (USB-C). The new Smart Folio costs £79. A Wi-Fi iPad mini plus Apple Pencil Pro therefore comes to £828 before any other accessories or discounts.
Should UK owners upgrade?
Consider upgrading if you frequently use a small tablet for video, drawing or reading and particularly value OLED contrast, or if your current mini is ageing and you need a performance refresh. Consider keeping your current device if it already handles browsing, streaming and note-taking well. An improved screen is attractive, but it does not automatically justify a £699 replacement.
Before ordering, compare the total cost of the storage capacity, connectivity and Pencil you actually need. The £150 premium between Apple's Wi-Fi and cellular starting prices may not be worthwhile for everyone, particularly if a phone hotspot is adequate. Cellular service also requires a separate compatible mobile data plan.
What about AI features?
Apple promotes Apple Intelligence support, but feature availability depends on language, region and software version. Its UK announcement says Siri AI is in beta with iPadOS 27.2, and some server-based features have usage limits. Buy for features available to you today, rather than assuming every advertised AI capability is unrestricted or identical across markets.
The ViralGadgets verdict
The new OLED iPad mini is one of the more distinctive small-tablet launches of 2026. Its biggest strengths are its pocketable form factor, upgraded screen and modern connectivity. The catch is the price: at £699 before accessories, it is a premium choice rather than a budget tablet. For existing owners, the best reason to upgrade is a specific need for the new display or performance — not simply that a new model has arrived.
